Catnip 101: Play That Winds Cats Down

Catnip has a funny reputation: ten minutes of zoomies, then a nap. That arc — a burst of play followed by deep relaxation — is exactly why it's one of the best tools for helping an under-stimulated indoor cat wind down. Here's how it works and how to use it well.

What catnip actually does

Catnip is a mint-family herb whose oil, nepetalactone, triggers a response in roughly two-thirds of adult cats: rolling, rubbing, batting, sprinting — a genuine play state that typically lasts 5–15 minutes. Afterward most cats settle into a long, contented rest, and the response won't recur for an hour or two no matter how much more they sniff. Kittens under about six months usually don't respond yet, and a minority of adults never do (silver vine is a popular alternative worth trying).

Indoor cats often carry unspent energy through the evening — which shows up as 3 a.m. hallway sprints. A short catnip play session before dinner mimics the natural hunt-eat-groom-sleep cycle: big burst of activity, a meal, then genuine rest. Used this way, a catnip kicker at 7 p.m. quietly buys you a full night.

Choosing catnip toys

  • Kicker toys: body-length pillows cats can hug and bunny-kick — the best outlet for big energy.
  • Refillable toys: pouches you re-stuff keep working for years; loose dried catnip stays potent stored airtight and away from light.
  • Small rattles and mice: good for batting games, easy to rotate so they stay novel.

Using it well

  • Offer catnip 2–3 times a week rather than daily — novelty is most of the fun.
  • Rotate toys: a catnip toy that "died" usually just needs two weeks in a sealed jar with fresh catnip.
  • A pinch rubbed on a new bed, scratcher or carrier makes unfamiliar things instantly interesting.
  • Most cats mellow with catnip, but a few get overstimulated — if play turns edgy, end the session with a treat toss and try shorter sessions.
